Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has been hospitalised following an assault while stopped in traffic on Cork Street in Dublin city centre on Wednesday afternoon.

An Garda Síochána stated that officers from Kevin Street station responded shortly after 4 p.m. to reports of an incident in which a driver in his late 50s was approached and assaulted by a lone male through an open car window. Passers-by alerted authorities, and gardaí arrived on the scene within minutes.

Mr Healy-Rae was initially brought to Kevin Street Garda Station, where he received medical treatment, before being transferred to St Vincent's University Hospital. His injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

Speaking on behalf of his father, Kerry Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae said the politician was shaken by the incident but is expected to make a full recovery. He expressed gratitude to emergency services and medical staff at St Vincent's Hospital for their quick response.

Addressing Dáil Éireann following the incident, fellow Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable. In a statement, An Garda Síochána confirmed that inquiries are ongoing and that no arrests have been made. Investigating officers have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage from the Cork Street area around the time of the incident to contact Kevin Street Garda Station.
