An inquest into the death of a 51-year-old man who suffered fatal head injuries following an interaction with gardaí in Dublin city centre has been adjourned after police oversight body Fiosrú confirmed that criminal proceedings are being contemplated.

Paul Butler, from Phibsborough, Dublin, died at the Mater Hospital on August 18, 2025, three days after an incident near the Holiday Inn on O'Connell Street. The opening of his inquest at Dublin District Coroner's Court on Wednesday heard that a postmortem conducted by assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster established he died from complications resulting from a traumatic head injury.

Coroner Dr Clare Keane granted an adjournment after being informed that Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, had completed its independent investigation and submitted a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The court was told that a direction from the DPP is currently awaited.

The matter had originally been referred to Fiosrú by An Garda Síochána under statutory provisions of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, which mandate independent oversight whenever an action or omission by garda personnel may have resulted in death or serious harm. A garda was arrested and questioned during the initial stages of the investigation and suspended from duty, but was released without charge pending the investigation's outcome. The officer has denied any wrongdoing.

During the court hearing, Mr Butler's partner, Áine McGrath, provided evidence of identifying him at the Mater Hospital on the day of the incident. The inquest has been adjourned pending the outcome of the DPP's decision.
